Just hours before its scheduled release, the highly anticipated H2M mod was shut down by Activision, leading thousands of fans to sign a petition demanding that Activision allow the mod to be released.
If you've been following news about the H2M mod, you're probably already familiar with it. The H2M mod aims to bring the classic multiplayer experience of Modern Warfare 2 to the Modern Warfare Remastered. When Modern Warfare Remastered was released, Activision disappointed a large portion of the fanbase by omitting a multiplayer mode.
It was precisely for this reason that the mod was met with such enthusiasm by Call of Duty fans as soon as it was announced. The H2M mod would not only bring players back to classic multiplayer combat but also restore some of the original maps and weapons, aiming to provide the best possible gaming experience for hardcore fans.
To use the mod, players needed to have Modern Warfare Remastered installed on their devices. Thanks to this prerequisite and a game discount, Modern Warfare Remastered briefly topped the Steam sales charts. Before the mod's release, it was already in the top three sales positions in the United States and in the top ten globally. The H2M team believed that since using the mod still required players to own the legitimate Modern Warfare Remastered, Activision would not shut down the project. However, just hours before the mod's release, Activision issued a cease and desist order and shut down the project, undoubtedly disappointing fans once again.
Angry fans flooded the Modern Warfare Remastered Steam page with negative reviews. Additionally, fans launched a petition on the Call of Duty community, stating that Activision should thank the developers of the H2M mod, as without it, the game's popularity would likely have continued to decline. At the same time, fans hope Activision can follow Rockstar Games' example in 2023 by acquiring the popular GTA Online role-playing mod "FiveM."
Thousands of players have signed the petition since its launch, hoping Activision will revoke the ban and allow the highly anticipated mod to be released. However, considering that the new game Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is about to start testing next week, Activision likely wants players to focus more on the new game rather than an eight-year-old game.
With the increasing number of petitioners and the continued bombardment of negative reviews on Steam, Activision may still need to come forward and explain its actions, giving fans a proper response.
