The innovative omnimovement system in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has significantly altered player combat strategies. Allowing players to sprint, slide, and dive in any direction, this new mechanic initially divided the community but has since gained widespread popularity.
Released on October 25th, Black Ops 6, the 21st installment in the Call of Duty franchise, retains many series hallmarks while introducing fresh gameplay elements. Associate Design Director Matt Scronce recently shed light on the rationale behind Black Ops 6's movement choices, and another Associate Director hinted at the future of this innovative system.
Season 1 Reloaded brought exciting additions to Black Ops 6's Zombies mode, alongside some controversial changes. In a recent interview with Dexerto, Treyarch's Associate Creative Director Miles Leslie discussed omnimovement and its potential longevity within the series.
While stopping short of a definitive answer, Leslie expressed confidence in the mechanic's potential since its conception. The development team, particularly at Treyarch and within the Black Ops series, has been a strong advocate for omnimovement. Inspired by witnessing players execute high-level maneuvers using the system, Leslie believes its full potential remains untapped.
Omnimovement isn't the only innovative feature introduced in Black Ops 6. The Body Shield move allows players to use enemies as human shields while still being able to return fire. While perhaps less impactful than omnimovement, this tactical maneuver showcases the franchise's continued commitment to innovation.
Leslie's interview suggests that future Call of Duty titles, especially those developed by Treyarch, are likely to retain omnimovement. Given the series' rotating development cycle, this isn't a guarantee, but the positive reception to the mechanic bodes well for its future.
Beyond omnimovement, Leslie also addressed the revival of classic content, hinting at more remastered maps from previous Black Ops titles. With Hacienda already returning from Black Ops 4, Leslie's statement that "no previous Black Ops title is off the table" is promising for fans of classic maps. However, the studio remains primarily focused on original designs for most post-launch maps.
For those yet to experience Black Ops 6, a free trial currently offers access to Multiplayer and Zombies modes, providing a risk-free opportunity to explore the game's new features.
