Activision's latest cosmetic bundle for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Warzone has ignited a fresh wave of debate within the community. The anime-inspired items have drawn criticism from some players who deem them more appropriate for a free-to-play mobile game than a mainline Call of Duty title. This isn't the first time Call of Duty's cosmetic choices have caused a rift, with unrealistic operator skins a recurring point of contention.
Since its October 25 release, Black Ops 6 has seen its share of cosmetic controversies. The mid-November release of the neon green Dragon Knight Mastecraft bundle baffled some fans, who questioned its fit within the game's early 90s setting. Conversely, others defended the inclusion, arguing that Call of Duty is an arcade shooter, not a military simulator, and thus unrealistic skins are acceptable.
A 52-year-old Black Ops 6 player recently shared an impressive accomplishment on social media, highlighting the diverse demographics within the game's community.
Despite calls for more realistic operator skins, Activision has released the “Otaku We Gotchu” bundle, arguably its most unconventional yet. This bundle includes a Kawaii emote, an anime-inspired operator skin, and two weapon blueprints: “Helm” for the LW3A1 Frostline sniper rifle and “Hardwire” for the C9 submachine gun. Additional cosmetic items like a charm, spray, loading screen, emblem, and a new reticle are also included.
While the bright pink operator skin might not appear as outlandish as some previous offerings, the LW3A1 Frostline’s weapon inspection feature has sparked controversy. This feature showcases a miniature version of the operator perched on the rifle, a detail that has not sat well with many players. Reddit users have voiced their disapproval, with some questioning the value proposition of such cosmetics and others expressing a desire for an option to disable cosmetic items in-game.
The ability to toggle the visibility of operator skins has become a recurring request among players, especially with each new bundle pushing the boundaries of outlandishness. While the Otaku We Gotchu bundle arguably features the most unusual weapon inspection element so far, leaked information suggests an even more bizarre addition is on the horizon: a finishing move involving a unicorn fart.
